What coherence means here
Heart rate is not perfectly even. The time between beats changes from moment to moment, a normal pattern called heart-rate variability, or HRV. Breathing is one of the strongest immediate influences on that pattern: heart rate commonly rises during inhalation and falls during exhalation.
During slow, even paced breathing, those changes can form a smoother and more regular wave. In HRV biofeedback this organized pattern is often called physiological or heart-rhythm coherence. It does not mean the heart and brain have literally locked together, and a coherence score is not a medical diagnosis.
Why six seconds up and six seconds down
A six-second inhale followed by a six-second exhale creates one twelve-second cycle, or five breaths per minute. Research on slow breathing often studies rates near five to six breaths per minute because this range can amplify breathing-related HRV and cardiorespiratory resonance. The precise resonance rate varies from person to person.
The breath should remain quiet and comfortable rather than maximally deep. Follow the ball upward as you inhale and downward as you exhale. There is no breath hold and no prize for forcing the full count.
Practice first; measure only if it helps
You do not need a sensor to practice. The guide simply supplies a consistent rhythm. Biofeedback can add another layer by showing how the heart rhythm changes while you breathe, but the number should support attention rather than become another performance target.

A gentle boundary
Practice while seated or lying down, never while driving or in water. Stop and return to normal breathing if you feel dizzy, numb, short of breath, panicked, faint, or uncomfortable. People with significant respiratory or cardiovascular conditions should ask their clinician whether paced breathing is appropriate for them.
This tool offers general breath pacing and education. It does not measure your heart rhythm, diagnose a nervous-system condition, or replace medical or mental-health care.
